Epy Djulianti is the Principal of Sekolah Indonesia Pelangi, a school based in New South Wales, Australia, dedicated to teaching the Indonesian language and culture. Founded in 2011, the school was created to meet the needs of Indonesian diaspora children and Australian students interested in learning Bahasa Indonesia. Andi Dwipasatya is an influential figure in the Indonesian community in Australia, particularly through her work with the Pelangi Indonesia School. As a Head Teacher in Kogarah High School, Andi plays a pivotal role in promoting the learning of Bahasa Indonesia among Indonesian diaspora children and Australian students. The school provides language education and cultural immersion, teaching students not only the language but also traditional dances, music, and Indonesian history. This initiative aims to preserve Indonesian culture and strengthen the bond between Indonesian migrants and their heritage.
In addition to her involvement in Pelangi Indonesia School, Andi also collaborates with the Indonesian Arts and Culture Club (IACC) and Advance Diversity Services (ADS). Through these platforms, she has helped organize cultural events that celebrate Indonesian traditions, such as the annual performance nights, which showcase the talents of young students and performers.
These events further highlight her commitment to cultural preservation and education within the community.
Jon Soemarjono, known as Pak Jon, was a foundational figure at Sekolah Indonesia Pelangi in New South Wales, Australia. As one of the founder and educator, he dedicated himself to teaching Bahasa Indonesia and promoting Indonesian culture among the local diaspora community. His efforts were instrumental in creating a nurturing environment for Indonesian children to connect with their heritage while also engaging with the broader Australian community.
Beyond the school, Jon was a founder of the Perhimpunan Indonesia – The Indonesian Association of NSW Inc. in 1984, a significant organization that united the Indonesian community. Throughout his life, Pak Jon received numerous accolades for his contributions, including the Australian of the Year award from the Canterbury Council in 2009, and several recognitions from the NSW government, highlighting his dedication to cultural preservation and community service.
Waode Sitti Yusran Sipala, known as Ibu Yus, is a passionate Indonesian language educator and community leader, involved with Sekolah Indonesia Pelangi in NSW Australia. Through her teaching at this school, Ibu Yus fosters cultural exchange by helping students from various backgrounds learn Bahasa Indonesia and Indonesian culture. She is also recognized for her work in raising awareness of the historical ties between Indonesia and Indigenous Australians, particularly focusing on the relationship between the Bugis-Makassar people and Indigenous communities in Northern Australia.
In addition to her teaching role, Ibu Yus is actively involved with IWINA (Ikatan Wanita Indonesia Australia), an organization that supports Indonesian women living in Australia. Through IWINA,
she engages in various community activities and helps promote cultural and social integration, empowering Indonesian women and celebrating Indonesia's heritage. Ibu Yus received Local Hero
of the Year Medallion in Australia Day 2023.
Clara Sudarmo is a key figure in the Indonesian community in Wollongong, Australia. She plays an important role in the management of Pelangi Indonesia School Wollongong, which was established in 2015. This school serves as a center for teaching the Indonesian language and culture to both Indonesians living in Australia and Australians. The school started with only a few students but has grown significantly over the years, catering to children and adults alike, including housewives, lecturers, and even members of parliament.
Clara and her team work closely with local authorities and the Indonesian Consulate to promote Indonesian language learning, emphasizing the cultural and economic importance of mastering
Bahasa Indonesia. The school has received support from the New South Wales government, which contributed to its expansion. Clara's dedication has helped foster cultural exchange and deeper ties between the Indonesian and Australian communities in Wollongong.
